Public service media in transition: challenges to face and ways forward

The “Public service media in transition: challenges to face and ways forward” hearing organised by the Committee on Culture, Science, Education and Media and the European Broadcasting Union in Strasbourg on 24 January 2019.

“The hearing was chaired by the Lord George Foulkes, General Rapporteur on media freedom and safety of journalists, PACE Committee on Culture, Science, Education and Media and Andres Herkel, member of the PACE Committee on Culture, Science, Education and Media and moderated by the former Vice-president of the EBU Boris Bergant.

Speakers, Vadym Misky, Secretary of Supervisory Board of the National Public Broadcasting Company of Ukraine (UA:PBC), Monika Garbačiauskaitė-Budrienė, Director General, Lithuanian National Radio and Television (LRT), Marko Filli, Representative of the Radiotelevizija Slovenija (RTV SLO) and Patricik Penninckx, head of the Council of Europe Information Society Department spoke about challenges public service media is facing in Europe these days, namely various problems with financing, editorial independence, technological challenges and legislative pressure. It was general consensus that public service media remains indispensable for ensuring pluralism and protection freedom of expression in the Council of Europe members states.”
