In 2025, PersVeilig reached an important milestone by becoming an independent foundation. Since its launch, PersVeilig has served as the Netherlands’ national support mechanism for journalists facing threats, harassment and intimidation. The transition followed an independent evaluation commissioned by the Ministries of Education, Culture and Science and of Justice and Security and is intended to ensure the long-term sustainability of the initiative.
While the newly established board is responsible for governance, budget and quality assurance, the existing steering committee bringing together media organisations, police and prosecutorial authorities continues to guide the substantive work of PersVeilig. The new structure further institutionalises cooperation between media stakeholders and public authorities in support of journalists’ safety.
