The Council of Europe’s Journalists Matter - Campaign for the Safety of Journalists will hold a side event on 27 October 2026, in the margins of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, under the title “Local Authorities and Media for Stronger Democracy”.
Taking place from 13.15 to 14.00 at the Palais de l’Europe, Room 9, Strasbourg, the event will explore how local and regional action can help create a safer and more enabling environment for journalism.
The discussion will bring together complementary perspectives from the Council of Europe, local and regional authorities, journalists and law enforcement. It will focus in particular on how local authorities can support strong and independent local media, what journalists need from public authorities and police in practice, and how dialogue, preparedness and structured cooperation can help prevent problems before tensions or crises arise.
The event will also highlight concrete experience from the field, including practical models of police-media cooperation, and consider which approaches could be adapted by municipalities, regions and law-enforcement authorities in other Council of Europe member States.
