Council of Europe Participates in European Commission’s Media Literacy Expert Group (MLEG) Meeting

On 5 March 2026, the Council of Europe participated as an observer in the meeting of the Media Literacy Expert Group (MLEG), organized by the European Commission’s DG CNECT in Brussels. Elena Brodeala, Legal Advisor in the Council of Europe’s Freedom of Expression and CDMSI Division, updated members and observers on recent Council of Europe initiatives to strengthen media literacy and counter disinformation.

Ms Brodeala highlighted that the Steering Committee on Media and Information Society (CDMSI) adopted two key policy documents in December 2025: National Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Strategies – Practical Steps and Indicators and Resisting Disinformation: 10 Building Blocks to Strengthen Information Integrity. These documents provide practical guidance for member states to develop and implement comprehensive MIL strategies and reinforce societal resilience against disinformation. Both documents will be officially launched at a high-level conference on Media Literacy and Information Integrity in Chișinău, Moldova, on 20 March 2026.

The Council of Europe stressed the importance of coordinated national approaches, multi-stakeholder cooperation, and evidence-based policymaking to foster informed, resilient societies across Europe.
