Albanian journalists sound the alarm on copyright issues at a roundtable discussion entitled “Copyright, not the right to copy”

The Albanian Media Council organized a roundtable on "Copyright, not the right to copy" in Tirana on 25 June 2018 focusing on media copyright issues, especially online. The activity aimed at fostering discussions over the challenges faced by Albanian journalists regarding copyright and intellectual property in the new media.

The participants appreciated that online media is flourishing in Albania and has created great opportunities for media content and expression, but it has also created a series of challenges for copyright and intellectual property. Renowned academics, journalists, online portal bloggers, and intellectual property lawyers engaged in sharing ideas concluding that online media should be consistent with the journalistic code of ethics if it is to become a serious media source.

One idea that found support was the creation of a memorandum of understanding with agreed rules on how to repost content and referencing as well as preserve the standards of genuine journalism as a guarantee of self-regulation in the new media.

The event was made possible thanks to a grant under the joint EU/CoE programme "Strengthening Judicial Expertise on Freedom of Expression and Media in South East Europe (JUFREX)".
