Back Advancing Media Freedom and Journalist Safety in Romania

A workshop titled “Advancing Media Freedom and Journalist Safety in Romania: Strengthening Independent Journalism, Advocacy, and Developing a National Action Plan” was organized on 4-5 October 2024 in Bucharest by Centro per la Cooperazione Internazionale/ Osservatorio Balcani Caucaso Transeuropa (OBCT), and the European Federation of Journalists, in cooperation with Median Research Centre (MCR) and “Journalists Matter” National Focal Point for Romania.

Besides journalists, academics, legal experts and representatives of the civil society, the event was also attended by a representative of the command structure of the Romanian Gendarmerie ( a structure of the Ministry of Internal Affairs which is responsible public order and safety). This marked an important step into improving the relationship between authorities and the community of journalists. Interesting proposals were discussed and retained to be further elaborated: a cooperation protocol of all parties present with the Romanian Gendarmerie, training sessions for the personnel of the MIA provided by journalists, training program for journalists on how to minimize their exposures to risk situations, advocacy with the Ministry of Justice to grant expedited resolutions of cases of aggressions against journalists.
