On 10-12 June 2025, the Executive Secretary of the Agreement participated in Rome in the first Plenary meeting of the Global Fire Management Hub organised by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation. The Plenary was a conclusion of a three-year long process of establishing, through a series of technical workshops (on-line and in person), of the Global Fire Management Hub and preparing a consent-based international instrument on fire management. The Plenary gathered the global Fire Hub community to build partnerships, harmonise national, regional, and global strategies, from planning and management to operational action on the ground and to facilitate constructive dialogue within the Fire Hub community of Integrated Fire Management (IFM) experts.
Nine plenary sessions and nine side events across the three days provided a platform to exchange knowledge, perspectives and experience. Prof. Johann Goldammer, Director of the Global Fire Monitoring Centre (GFMC), whose invaluable expertise and involvement was essential in the process of the Hub’s creation, attended the Plenary meeting, chairing a number of sessions.
In his address, the Executive Secretary referred to the Reykjavík process stemming from the Summit of Heads of State and Government, and the recently adopted CoE Convention on the Protection of the Environment through Criminal Law and the new Strategy on the Environment.
