Congress organises training on human rights and local democracy for young Ukrainians

The Congress organised a training course for young people from the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, in Dnipro, Ukraine, from 28 to 31 January 2020. The aim of the course was to equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between local democracy and human rights and to raise their awareness of these issues, so that they can enjoy the full benefit of their human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Participants debated with national and international experts on topics such as human rights standards and their local and regional dimension, as well as the roles and responsibilities of local authorities and the involvement of young people. They also debated youth participation with representatives of local authorities, with the objective of encouraging them to be more engaged in local decision-making and local political life.

The training course was organised in the framework of the project “Strengthening democracy and building trust at local level in Ukraine” implemented by the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities as part of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Ukraine 2018-2021. The project aims to improve the quality of local democracy in Ukraine by strengthening institutional frameworks and supporting local authorities and their national associations in their efforts to promote ethical decision-making and more citizen-oriented, responsive and transparent local governance.
