Congress launches a new project on local governance in Armenia

“Local democracy and local self-government has been and will remain one of the key areas of the Council of Europe Action Plans to support democratic reforms in Armenia” stressed Congress Director Jean-Philippe Bozouls in Yerevan on 26 September 2019. Speaking at the launching conference for the second phase of the Programme on Local Governance in Armenia, financed by Switzerland, he highlighted the Congress’ new project on open government at local level, to be implemented under the programme as part of the ambitious Council of Europe Action Plan.

“We will be working with mayors, councillors and municipal servants to raise awareness of the Council of Europe standards on political integrity, ethics and transparency, and will support local authorities in implementing measures to prevent corruption and improve citizens’ trust in local institutions,” underlined Mr. Bozouls.

Congress Director also added that the Armenian Government’s commitment to regular dialogue with local authorities and their associations will be crucial for the success of the project and the overall improvement of local democracy in Armenia. The project will also contribute to realising the road map on implementing Congress recommendations for Armenia, signed in 2016 with the Armenian Government, he concluded.
