Debate on the role of the legislator in promoting freedom of expression and freedom of the media

Within the framework of the project “Accompanying the transitional process towards democracy in Tunisia with the promotion of freedom of expression, independence of the media and public access to information”, the Council of Europe organised on 27 June 2016 in Tunis a debate gathering Tunisian Parliamentarians, academics and representatives of the High Independent Authority for Audiovisual Communication (HAICA) and of civil society.
Participants shared their parliamentary experience and discussed the role of the legislator in promoting freedom of expression and freedom of the media in Tunisia, highlighting the importance of these freedoms in a context of democratic transition while also creating sufficient legal guarantees in this field.
This debate followed a study visit for a group of Tunisian Parliamentarians which took place in Strasbourg from 20 to 24 June 2016 allowing them to become more familiar with the standards and the mechanisms of the Council of Europe aimed at protecting freedom of expression and freedom of the media.
