The Training of Tutors are designed to equip alumni of HEY online courses with the skills and knowledge to promote human rights culture and guide learning process within their communities

These six-day residential training sessions are held twice a year as part of the North-South Centre’s Youth Universities. Certified HEY junior tutors are expected to act as multipliers by facilitating HEY online courses and contributing to the integration of human rights education into youth work practices.

Methodology and objectives

The HEY Training of Tutors (ToT) equips HEY alumni to facilitate online courses using the HEY methodology.

The ToT covers: pedagogical aspects (intercultural context, non-formal education, human rights-based approach), technical aspects (HEY platform, moodle features), legal frameworks (Council of Europe, UN, African Union, League of Arab States), and practical exercises. Based on a non-formal education approach, it combines theory and hands-on activities to create an engaging and effective learning experience. The CoE Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture (RFCDC) is the reference in terms of competences acquired.

Various interactive methods, such as group work, discussions, simulations and peer learning, are employed to encourage participation, critical thinking and collaboration. These methods also aim to foster strong group dynamics and encourage future collaboration among participants, thus helping to establish a network dedicated to human rights education. The training concludes with a simulation exercise in which participants design and facilitate a sample HEY course. This final assessment evaluates their ability to apply the HEY methodology, use non-formal education methods and manage the HEY e-learning platform. Those who successfully complete the training will be officially certified as HEY tutors.
