Vision Europe 2016: Fostering social belonging and integration

Mr. Hugo Martinez de Seabra is Project Manager of Vision Europe 2016. The latter is a consortium of think tanks and foundations (including the Gulbankian Foundation of which Mr. Seabra is member) “trying to address some of the most pressing public policy challenges in Europe”.

In his speech Mr. Seabra has presented the results of the 2016 initiatives of Vision Europe, which are focused on migration and refugee issues. In particular, the practical recommendations emerged from the work of Vision Europe aim at building a common ground to promote a more resilient Europe.

In this sense it is essential to stop being non-communicative and producing non-communicative responses, hence it necessary to implement strategic solutions and encourage dialogue and common actions among Member States and, of course, build trust.

Another main target, suggested by Mr. Seabra, is to develop coherent and fair mechanisms for preventing and managing migration flows. This in particular refers to the necessity of promoting stability and opportunities in the countries of origin. A fundamental step is also fostering social belonging and integration, which means for example to encourage early employment.

In the end, Mr. Seabra indicates the urgency of mobilizing society in order to promote inclusiveness, through inter cultural dialogue and the role of media which are meant “to support an open-evidence dialogue and bottom-up approaches based on community”.
