Back Human rights perspective on encryption debated at ISOC

Patrick Penninckx, Head of the Information Society Department addressed the human rights challenges related to encryption technologies in a webinar on 19 November 2020. Organised by the Internet Society (ISOC), the webinar on the “The Future of Encryption in the EU” examined several ongoing EU digital initiatives, such as the Digital Services Act’s IMCO report and the ePrivacy Regulation, that have emphasized the importance of end-to-end encryption to securing interpersonal communication. The presentation focused on the “Encryption and the new digital agenda”, reviewing the challenges from a human rights perspective, policies to address those challenges and specific Council of Europe instruments on data protection, cybercrime and freedom of expression.

This webinar provided an opportunity to EU policymakers, civil society, and industry members to discuss the role that encryption in securing Europe’s digital future and the upcoming trends and challenges that might impact the use of encryption in the EU.
