Concrete achievements to ensure the protection of refugee and migrant children

On 16 January 2019, the Special Representative took stock of and published a comprehensive presentation of all concrete actions achieved so far in the implementation of the Council of Europe Action Plan on protecting migrant and refugee children in Europe (2017-2019), including the relevant resources linked to the results. The Special Representative acknowledged the commitment and joint efforts of the different units dealing with migration at the Council of Europe. He extended his thanks to Andorra, Belgium, Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Liechtenstein, Monaco and Serbia) who contributed financially in the implementation of the Action Plan. He also expressed appreciation to Azerbaijan, Germany, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland, and the European Union for their voluntary contributions to projects covered jointly under the PACE Campaign End Immigration Detention of Children and the Action Plan on Building Inclusive Societies.

On 21 January 2019, the Special Representative is participating in a debate on EU migration management in the sidelines of the Parliamentary Assembly´s January session. Other participants in the debate are: Meglena Kuneva, Head of EU Delegation to the Council of Europe, Simon Mordue, Deputy-Director General, Directorate General for Migration and Home Affairs, European Commission and Doris Fiala, Chairperson of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly Committee on Migration, Refugees and Displaced persons. The debate aims to discuss the current challenges, results achieved and the way forward.

On 14 January 2019 in Paris, the Office of the Special Representative organised a meeting of the expert group drafting the compilation of good practice examples of child-friendly procedures related to migration. The experts reviewed the contributions received as a result of a public call for examples and decided on the main themes of the compilation, such as, for example, entrance and registration, child protection and durable solutions. The compilation is being prepared under the Council of Europe Action Plan on protecting migrant and refugee children and it is expected to be launched in autumn 2019. Concept note.
