The last 2023 “Caffè Europa” focuses on cultural heritage

 

On 22 May 2023, the last “Caffè Europa” took place at the historical Caffè Florian, the oldest coffee house in Europe. The debate, framed by the stunning view on Saint Mark’s square, dealt with cultural heritage and the importance of its safeguard.

Speakers, moderated by Giovanni De Luca, Director of RAI Veneto, recalled both the fragility and resilience of tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Ermelinda Damiano, President of the City Council of Venice, spoke about the numerous craft activities of the Venetian traditions. Sneška Quaedvlieg-Mihailovic, Secretary General of Europa Nostra, emphasized the value of European cultural heritage and the beauty of Venice, announcing the opening of new Europa Nostra hub in Venice and its September Summit which will celebrate the organization’s 60th birthday. Paola Marini, President of the Private International Committees for the Safeguard of Venice, explained their activities and stressed the importance of cooperation with public institutions. Luisella Pavan-Woolfe, Director of the Council of Europe Office in Venice, evoked the rich cultural heritage of Italy and the strong engagement of communities in protecting it also through the implementation of the Council of Europe Faro Convention.
