As part of the commemorations coordinated by the City of Venice for Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Council of Europe Office in Venice, in collaboration with CoopCulture, Europe Direct of the City of Venice, and the Italian Association "Figli della Shoah," is organizing a series of public events.
This year’s initiative explores the theme of Memory through three different lenses: educational, literary, and cinematographic.
Monday, 20 January – 5:00 PM (Scoletta dei Calegheri, Venice) The cycle opens with a meeting featuring Matteo Corradini, writer and author of Noi siamo Memoria and Tu sei memoria. The discussion will focus on the meaning of Memory today, offering theoretical and practical tools for educators to approach the history of the Shoah with younger generations. The session aims to transform Memory into an active experience of individual and collective responsibility.
Tuesday, 21 January – 5:30 PM (Cinema Dante, Mestre) The second event features the screening of the film The Book Thief by Brian Percival. The movie highlights how literature can become an act of resistance and humanity in the face of oppression and violence.
Tuesday, 28 January – 5:30 PM (Casa del Cinema, Venice) The cycle concludes with the screening of Everything Is Illuminated by Liev Schreiber. This road movie addresses Memory as a search for one's roots and the vital necessity of preserving the past, following the principle that "everything is illuminated by the light of the past."
