Clearing the fog: ensuring real information by journalists for citizens

Around 80 regional journalists from the Venice region have attended an innovative training course focused on intelligence and information.  The course was designed to show how applying Council of Europe tools and standards can help them overcome the challenges of maintaining accurate information in the current media environment, including the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine.

Co-organised by the Council of Europe Office in Venice, in partnership with the Municipality of Venice and Mazzanti editori, the event consisted of one session on “hybrid warfare” and another on correct information policies promoted by the Council of Europe.  It took place in in the framework of the Council of Europe Visibility Days.

Attending the event, Giuliano Gargano, President of the Association of Journalists of the Veneto Region (Ordine dei Giornalisti), said:

“Today for us Europe is a consolidated reality, but the tensions currently characterising it take us back to the times of the Cold War. It is no coincidence that just one year ago, after the aggression against Ukraine, Russia was excluded from the Council of Europe. Therefore, it is crucial for us journalists to inform and stay updated on the role, the aims and the co-operation between institutions and organisations.”

The initiative was held during the 11th edition of the European Days highlighting human rights and fundamental freedoms.
