On Friday 10 April, the M9 Museum in Mestre once again became a center for international dialogue during the International Festival of European Geopolitics. Mario Schwetz, Director of the Council of Europe Office in Venice, shared an analysis of the current "health" of international law and democracy in a world facing increasing global tensions due to the return of unilateralism.
The Director pointed out that the mission started in 1949 by the Organization is more relevant today than ever as essential treaties, such as the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), now faces new geopolitical challenges that threaten to undermine decades of progress.
A key message of the day was that democracy needs for sure strong laws and institutions; but as well it requires political will and active citizen participation to survive. The link between law and democracy must remain strong to prevent the loss of fundamental rights. In this challenging times, the Council of Europe continues to stand for our freedoms and European values.
