Public Conference "The right to a fair trial before international administrative tribunals"
14 October 2025, Palais de l'Europe, Strasbourg
To mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of a judicial mechanism for settling employment disputes within the Council of Europe, the Administrative Tribunal was pleased to invite all those concerned, or simply interested in international civil service law, to a conference at the Palais de l’Europe in Strasbourg, on 14 October 2025.
Open to all members of the public, the conference explored the role of international administrative tribunals in upholding the right of a fair trial, as enshrined particularly in Article 6 of the European Convention of Human Rights.
The conference brought together judges of international administrative tribunals, former and current judges of the European Court of Human Rights, as well as leading scholars and practitioners, and aims at advancing reflection on issues that are fundamentally inherent to the notion of fair trial:
- In disputes involving international organisations which generally benefit from immunities, is there a right of access to a court?
- To what extent is an international organisation’s discretionary power in employment matters subject to review by international administrative tribunals?
- Under what conditions can judgments issued by international administrative tribunal offer proper reparation?
In addressing these questions, the conference offered participants firsthand information into the protection of employee’s rights in international organisations, together with expert perspectives on possible future developments in this area of international law.
