On 24-25 November 2017, in Hamburg, Germany, representatives of the Council of Europe Media and Internet Division participated in the CMMA2017: Conference on Media and Migration, organised by the Refugee Radio Network. The event gathered over 200 international participants from civil society, institutions and media and it focused on the role and responsibilities of media in enabling (or hindering) social empowerment and participation of all members of society. Media makers and activists with a refugee or migrant background played a key role in the discussions, which underlined the impact in particular of community media in promoting freedom of expression and participation in public debate of newly arrived refugees and migrants. The spread of misinformation via social media and the importance of media pluralism for a free communication environment were also underlined. The Council of Europe commissioned explorative study “Spaces of inclusion – needs for refugees and migrants in the domain of media communication and responses by community media” was presented and will be made public later this month.
