Global Education Week 2018: “The world is changing, what about us?”
Learn to see other perspectives and think critically with media literacy

The North –South Centre of the Council of Europe launched a social media campaign for media literacy on Facebook and Twitter, highlighting the importance of developing critical thinking towards media content. The campaign is part of the Global Education Week, from 19 to 25 November, an annual event to promote global education across Europe.

The campaign disseminates knowledge about media literacy and raises awareness of the importance of critical thinking for a peaceful and inclusive society. Media have penetrated our lives to such a deep extent that media education needs to be an integral part of global education.

Media literacy and global education

Media literacy should empower citizens to become more critical and aware in a fast-paced digital society. At the same time, it should raise critical thinking about media use and production. In this context, global education sees media literacy as a way to bridge education to citizenship for the XXI century through reflective learning, multi-perceptivity and the development of critical thinking.

The role of Global educators

Media use in general, and in particular social media use, offer both risks and opportunities. The role of the global educator would be to raise a critical perspective about the risks associated with media use while providing specific solutions to empower individuals, both at local and global level. In this context, an educator should explore multi perceptivity, and the alternatives to dominant models, which may be prevalent in certain media circles.
