The Intercultural city aims at building its policies and identity on the explicit acknowledgement that diversity can be a resource for the development of the society.

The first step is the adoption (and implementation) of strategies that facilitate positive intercultural encounters and exchanges, and promote equal and active participation of residents and communities in the development of the city, thus responding to the needs of a diverse population. The Intercultural integration policy model is based on extensive research evidence, on a range of international legal instruments, and on the collective input of the cities member of the Intercultural Cities programme that share their good practice examples on how to better manage diversity, address possible conflicts, and benefit from the diversity advantage.

This section offers examples of intercultural approaches that facilitate the development and implementation of intercultural strategies.

On the occasion of the World Day against Racism, the Department for Immigration of the city of Ravenna and the House of Cultures, in collaboration with the Civil Network against racism and other local associations, promoted “The Week of action against racism 2018”, a structured and nurtured programme of events, information and awareness initiatives. The Week stimulated a process of confrontation and exchange aimed at preventing and combating phenomena of intolerance, discrimination and racism.
The programme was presented to the public by Ms Valentina Morigi, Councilor for Immigration Policies, and Mr  Matteo Cavezzali, representing “Scritture di frontiera”.
"The migratory movement of our time - said the Councilor Valentina Morigi - are a complex and articulated phenomenon that cannot be ignored or exploited but must be governed with policies of acceptance and solidarity to deal with racism and intolerance. It is important to create opportunities for reflection and meeting, and to cultivate understanding, solidarity and trust, which are the objectives of our programme of initiatives ".

Many organisations contributed to the preparation of the programme, including the Camelot cooperative, the Terra mia associations, Islamic Relief, Alliance of Tunisian associations in Italy, Citizens of the world, Arci Circolo Mamas, RibellARTI, Amnesty International.
The exhibition "Touroperator - Diary of Lives from the Sea of Sicily", by the artist Massimo Sansavini has been launched before the Week against Racism and used as a didactic occasion within the project "Odyssey", dedicated to educational practices on preventing racism, carried out in 19 classes of different middle schools of Ravenna Cervia and Russi.
A multiethnic soccer tournament "Un calcio alla racismo" was also organised, so as a musical theater play on migration, and the launch of several related books followed by debates in public libraries.
