Protecting Media Freedom in Sports discussed in Paris

On 17 October 2022, Patrick Penninckx, Head of the Information Society Department, addressed the Annual Assembly of the News Media Coalition. Speaking in a session “Growing Governmental Support for News Content Freedom at Major Events” he elaborated on the Media Freedom in Sports from the Council of Europe prospective. In fact, there is a number of alerts on the Platform to protect journalism which concern journalists covering sport events and portray specific challenges in this area. The Council of Europe has elaborated a comprehensive compendium of policies to protect freedom of expression and media freedom and is currently preparing a campaign for the safety of journalists. The speaker underlined that media freedom in sport is an issue that deserves the attention of policy makers and recalled that, since the News Media Coalition has joined the CDMSI as an observer in December 2021, new opportunities for collaboration have emerged in developing and promoting standards and tools to help Member States.
