Inter-professional discussion on increasing role of whistleblowers

Under the Joint Project Reinforcing Judicial Expertise on Freedom of Expression and the Media in South-East Europe (JUFREX), co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe, an inter-professional discussion was organised in Pristina on 19 September 2018. The aim of the event was to deconstruct the concept of whistleblowing and its key aspects by analysing thoroughly the legal and practical dimension as well as the social understanding of whistleblowing.

The discussion gathered journalists, lawyers and students of law and journalism faculties who were introduced to the European and Council of Europe standards on protection of whistleblowers and the impact particular whistleblowing cases had in different societies.

The discussion which was led by international and local experts was very relevant and aroused great interest among participants as currently Kosovo* has some on-going whistleblowing cases which were discussed during the Q&A session.

The views expressed therein can in no way be taken to reflect the official opinion of the European Union.
*This designation is without prejudice to positions to status, and is in line with UNSC 1244 and the ICJ Opinion on the Kosovo Declaration of Independence.
