On 14 and 15 October 2025, the Security Innovation Center hosted the third workshop on Seismic Assessment and Retrofitting of Masonry in Preserved Structures in Belgrade. The workshop, organised under the aegis of the EUR-OPA Network of Scientific Centres, gathered specialists from the European Centre on Prevention and Forecasting of Earthquakes (ECPFE) in Greece, the European Centre on the Vulnerability of Industrial and Lifeline Systems (ECILS), in North Macedonia, who for the first time were joined by their Serbian counterparts, the Security Innovation Center (University of Belgrade).
The Seismic Assessment and Retrofitting of Masonry project has been running for a number of years and has proven its usefulness by delivering concrete results as regards transfer of know-how and establishment of direct lines of communication between specialists in the field of seismic assessment and retrofitting of masonry in listed structures constituting valuable cultural heritage of the countries participating in the project. Expansion of the project to include Security Innovation Center, which is the newest centre to join the Network in 2024, is particularly welcome as it demonstrates strong interest on the part of new partners to join the project.
In addition to the exchange of know-how at the workshop, the centres reviewed preliminary data from masonry and preserved structures and discussed lessons learned from the implementation of the new Greek Code on Seismic assessment and retrofitting of masonry structures (KAΔΕΤ).
On the second day of the workshop, the participants visited the Monastery of Žiča and discussed preservation techniques most appropriate for this structure dating back to the 13th century.
