GLACY+: CABO VERDE virtually hosts the annual International Conference on Cybercrime and International Cooperation during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Community of Portuguese Language Countries

The Presidency of Cape Verde of the Conference of Ministers of Justice from the Portuguese Speaking Countries (CMJPLOP), in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice and Labour of Cape Verde and the GLACY+ project hosted, between 18 and 20 November, the second annual international meeting on Cybercrime and International Cooperation in the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP). In line with the program of the Presidency of Cape Verde of CMJPLOP, whose theme is “Combating cybercrime: A new challenge for justice”, this year´s meeting focused on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the cybercrime national scenario of the participant countries and ways to tackle the new challenges. The topics were structured in three broad sessions, as it follows:

  • Session 1: Cybercrime trends during COVID-19 pandemic
  • Session 2: Cybercrime investigations and protection of personal data
  • Session 3: International cooperation on cybercrime and electronic evidence and CPLP rolle

The countries had the opportunity to achieve a better common understanding of cybercrime laws in the CPLP countries, identify potential gaps and launch discussions about ways to overcome the present situation and further strengthen international dialogue and cooperation. The benefits of acceding to the Budapest Convention and possible next steps towards it were highlighted in the concluding remarks delivered by Cape Verde.

Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, East Timor, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe were present at this online event.

Out of the 9 CPLP member countries, Portugal and Cape Verde are part of the Budapest Convention, while Brazil was invited to join the convention in late 2019.
