CyberSouth: Workshop on the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime in Algeria

The Council of Europe in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Algeria held a workshop on Budapest Convention on Cybercrime, at Résidence des magistrats in Algiers, on 2 September 2018.

This workshop was an opportunity to present the Budapest Convention to Algerian authorities and the benefits for Algeria to join this international treaty. The workshop aimed to open discussions on concerns that a State might have before joining the Convention and also addressed some of the requirements of this treaty. Active participation from the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Interior, Gendarmerie Nationale, the Direction Générale de la Sécurité Nationale, the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Post Office, Telecommunication technology and digital and academia ensured an open exchange on arguments of joining this Convention for Algeria. The Budapest Convention has now 61 countries that are Party and another 10 that have either signed or been invited to accede. Among CyberSouth priority countries, Morocco is full party and Tunisia has been invited to accede. CyberSouth project will continue to support and strengthen institutions in Algeria with responsibilities on cybercrime and electronic evidence, aiming that this will facilitate Algerian authorities’ decision about the Convention.
