UN Ad Hoc Committee on ICT crimes: side-event on capacity building by the Czech Republic

The Permanent Mission of the Czech Republic to the United Nations in New York, with INTERPOL and the Council of Europe (Octopus Project) on 31 August 2022 organised, a high-level event on capacity building in the fight against cybercrime. The event was held in the fringes of the 3rd session of the “UN Ad Hoc Committee to Elaborate a Comprehensive International Convention on Countering the Use of Information and Communication Technologies for Criminal Purposes".

The Council of Europe, INTERPOL, Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Germany, Morocco and Senegal shared their experience on capacity building in the fight against cybercrime. The event provided useful insights for the subsequent reflections in the AHC on the chapter on technical assistance in the future UN treaty.

The meeting was moderated by Marta Pelechová, Chief Negotiator, International Dossiers Coordinator, Ministry of Justice of the Czech Republic, with introductory remarks by Ambassador Jakub Kulhánek, Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to the United Nations and Ambassador Faouzia Boumaiza Mebarki, Chair of the Ad-Hoc Committee and Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations in Vienna.

Through the Octopus Project, the Council of Europe will continue to provide support to countries worldwide to build capacities to fight cybercrime and other offences involving electronic evidence, as well as for legislative alignment with international best practices based on the Convention on Cybercrime as a global standard. The Council of Europe gratefully acknowledges voluntary contributions of the donors to this project.
