CyberEast: Introductory and Advanced training on cybercrime and electronic evidence for 20 Ukrainian judges

Between 2-6 May 2023, the National School of Judges of Ukraine, with the support of CyberEast, a joint project of the Council of Europe and of the European Union, held an introductory training course, followed by an advanced session on cybercrime and electronic evidence, designed for judges wishing to expand their knowledge and start initial steps towards a career as cybercrime and e-evidence trainers.

Zahid JAMIL and Hania El HELWEH, Council of Europe international consultants, specifically adapted this exercise to the needs of judges from Odessa and Dnipro regions, with a focus on key concepts of cybercrime and electronic evidence. The in-depth, five-day training sessions enabled participants to gain better working knowledge of the provisions of the Convention on Cybercrime (Budapest Convention) in relation to local legislation and concepts regarding electronic evidence and international co-operation.

Those in attendance had positive comments about the pertinence of this exercise; one judge noted that: “All the acquired knowledge and skills can be applied during the consideration of court cases, that is, all the information obtained is of an applied nature, and can be used in practical activities.”

Representatives of the National School of Judges in Ukraine also took part in this course, and they have agreed to integrate it into their Judicial Training strategy.
