No Hate Web. No Hate Speech: European Symposium, 28-30 May 2015

Strasbourg, 10 April The Conference of INGOs together with the International League against Racism and and Antisemitism (LICRA) is organising a European Symposium at the Council of Europe, from 28 to 30 May 2015. The event is for students, experts, academics and the education community, internet experts, associations, INGOs and politicians, who will look at tools and practices to eradicate hate speech, online and offline.

Candidates for the post of Rapporteur of the Bureau of the Conference of INGOs

Strasbourg, 5 May The Verification and Dispute Committee of the Conference of INGOs met last week to validate the candidatures for the post of Rapporteur of the Bureau. The following candidates will be standing for election:

Liviu Romel Olteanu, International Association for the Defence of Religous Liberty
Helene Pichon, Centre for Study and Strategic Prospective

New Joint Guidelines on Freedom of Association

Strasbourg, 27 April New Guidelines on Freedom of Associatin have been developed jointly by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights and the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe. The Guidelines offer advice and expertise on how to legislate on freedom of association-related matters in a manner consistent with international human rights standards and OSCE commitments. They also reflect evolving good state practices and are intended to support advocacy and enhance awareness of the right to freedom of association in general.

Council of Europe Conference of Ministers responsible for Heritage, Namur, 22-24 April

Strasbourg, 27 April Sabine Rohmann, Chair of the Education and Culture Committee represented the Conference of INGOs at the Ministerial Conference in Namur organised by the Belgian Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers. The Conference "Cultural heritage in the 21st century for living better together: Towards a common strategy for Europe" aimed to establish the conditions for developing a European heritage strategy.

Bureau of the Conference of INGOs nominates new members of the Expert Council on NGO

Strasbourg, 23 April The Bureau of the Conference of INGOs nominated on 20 April new members of the Expert Council on NGO Law and confirmed the current members and the President, Cyril Ritchie. The fourteen members of the Expert Council cover various aspects related to NGO legislation and an enabling environment for NGOs and come from many different countries including Azerbaijan. Intigam Aliyev, currently in prison in Azerbaijan, was nominated in recognition of his support and work for human rights defenders and freedom of association. The three year term of office of the members begins on 1 July 2015.

Exchange of views with the Minister Delegate for Social Dialogue of Romania, Strasbourg 20 April

Strasbourg, 21 April The Minister Delegate for Social Dialogue of Romania, Mr Liviu-Marian Pop, was invited to the Standing Committee for an exchange of views on the current and future practice of the government in engaging in dialogue with civil society. He informed the INGOs about the creation in Romania of a consultative body attached to the Prime Minister's Office which would hold regular meetings with NGOs. He also highlighted the important role played by NGOs with regard to the rights of persons with disabilities.

Meetings of the Bureau and the Standing Committee, Strasbourg 20 April

Strasbourg, 15 April The Bureau and the Standing Committee of the Conference of INGOs met in Strasbourg on 20 April. The Bureau nominated the new members of the Expert Council on NGO Legislation. Discussion in the Standing Committee, the first meeting since the elections in January, focused on the working methods, work plan and priorities of the Conference. An exchange of views was held with the Minister Delegate for Social Dialogue of Romania at which the Minister presented the current and future practice of the government in engaging in dialogue with civil society. Civil society representatives from Belarus take part in the sessions of the Parliamentary Assembly and meet relevant interlocutors at the Council of Europe and Permanent Representations.
