On 12 October 16:30 to 18.00 CET, the Campaign for the Right to a Healthy Environment at the Council of Europe and the Conference of INGOs (CINGO) are convening an open dialogue on the need for a legally binding instrument on the right to a healthy environment, for example, in the form of a standalone convention. The open dialogue will be followed by an interactive reception, providing space for informal exchanges and networking among diplomats, civil society representatives and UN human rights experts.
The event, coorganised with Child Rights International Network (CRIN) and the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL), will also be attended by members of the Steering Committee on Environment (CDENV) and other Council of Europe bodies and their Secretariat interested in the subject. It aims to build momentum and address any outstanding concerns or legal questions on the path toward drafting a Council of Europe standalone convention on the right to a healthy environment. It will contribute to the preparation for the work of the CDENV which will be holding its second meeting on 13 and 14 October.
The event also marks the five-year anniversary of the UN Human Rights Council’s Resolution 48/13 recognising the right to a healthy environment. Against this important milestone, it will offer an open and constructive space for Member States to reflect on the opportunity for Europe to take the next step towards recognising and effectively protecting the right to a healthy environment.
