Global Education News is an electronic newsletter where national global education coordinators or practitioners can share global education news and best practices, useful thematic links and educational materials. It also serves as a medium for the North-South Centre global education network national coordinators' own use.

    Dear friends,

    Dialogue for a shared sustainable future has marked the beginning of 2009, with international events bringing our attention to the need of a concerted action for a safe and fair development. Fair development with equal rights to prevent social tensions. A just development made possible through a participatory democracy and the engagement of active citizens.

    An active citizenship aware of the world challenges is what Global Education is aiming at. Active participation and dialogue built up throughout education is what the Global Education Guidelines is glad to offer;

    An awareness of world challenges built up also through youth networking, bridging European and African youth leaders in training and partnership projects offered in the frame of the North-South Centre Africa Europe Youth Summit follow-up;

    Finally, a dialogue for a real gender parity, involving decision-makers and civil society organisations from both shores of the Mediterranean sea is another contribution of the North-South Centre to make intercultural dialogue a reality.

    We invite you to get acquainted to North-South Centre numerous activities which have marked the beginning of 2009 through its website and through this newsletter that we are happy to share with you.

    Sharing good practices
    North-South Centre World Aware Education Award laureate projects:
    World Aware Education Award announcement launched in July through the Global Education newsletter and the NSC website resulted in numerous applications from Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Hungary, Ireland, Palestine, Romania, Slovakia and UK.
    Based on the international jury assessment the three projects nominated for WAEA laureates are:
    1. DFID Global School Partnerships – UK
    2. Global High Schools – Denmark
    3. Tales of Disasters, by No Strings International  & Trocaire – Ireland

    Calls
    . DEEEP is looking for an evaluator to undertake the evaluation of phase 2, which will come to an end in September. The aim of this evaluation is to assess to which extent DEEEP has been able to achieve its objectives, and to propose suggestions and recommendations for improvement.

    . The International Centre for Innovation in Education (ICIE) is organizing its second international conference, entitled: "Excellence in Education 2009: Leading Minds Creating the Future. This conference will take place in Ulm, Germany. For more information, will you please access conference website. We are inviting you to submit your abstracts and join our conference.

    . International Greening Education Event in Karlsruhe - Germany (About Ecologizing Education) : A three-day International Seminar on Greening Education will be held from 17 to 19 June 2009 in the “green” city of Karlsruhe, Germany. This event will take education and environmental policy makers, academicians, teachers, school managers and environmental professionals through the need for greening the education, and then discuss effective initiatives that governments, education institutions and development organisations need to take and can take to provide sustainable knowledge, skills, values and practices in the classrooms and in the communities.
