TREATMENT
In the field of treatment, the Pompidou Group is focusing on signalling problems in day-to-day practice, which are not addressed or acknowledged by current policies or research.

It strives to promote standards for good practice and to identify priorities and needs.
Activities
Aims
• To improve the treatment and care of specific groups, by adapting treatment to new trends, substances and patterns of consumption

• To assess the results of different modalities of treatment

• To evaluate risk reduction interventions and measures to reduce harm to society
Recent work
The Pompidou Group is focusing its work in drug treatment field on providing an overview of how treatment systems function in different countries, how treatment guidelines are developed and implemented, how to respond to new trends in drugs consumption, notably to the use of stimulant drugs. Another focus is drugs and prisons where standards concerning prisons developed within the framework of the Council of Europe serve as a basis for the Pompidou Group’s comprehensive approach to treatment and rehabilitation of drug using offenders.

Two overviews presenting the treatment systems of 28 countries were published: Treatment systems overview (October 2010) and Treatment systems overview in South-East Europe (March 2011). They provide a description of the epidemiology, the history of drug treatment and the organisation of treatment services across Europe.

The use of stimulant drugs is increasing and the types of stimulants circulating among the European population seem to be more differentiated than before. This results in problems for prevention, treatment and harm reduction. Facing this issue, the Pompidou Group organised a conference in May 2010 to summarise important developments in treatment of stimulant drugs use.

Principles of knowledge-based medicine are useful for drug treatment as it is in any other parts of medicine. A conference on bridging the gap between clinical practice and evidence-based practice in the development of guidelines and recommendations for drug treatment took place in May 2009.

The Pompidou Group acknowledges that examples of the effective treatment include offers of treatment services that combine all available sources of support, at various levels, including from peer groups, from family and from others. The common denominators of examples of good practice include: a high level of flexibility and the possibility for effective, intersectoral cooperation between law-enforcement, social and health services.
