On the occasion of Holocaust Memorial Day 2025, the City of Venice presents and coordinates a calendar of more than fifthy commemorative events. The Council of Europe Office in Venice gives its support participating to official events and organizing three initiatives aimed at keeping alive the memory of the Holocaust and commemorating the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi extermination camp of Auschwitz.

Film screening “Woman in Gold”

The film depicts the story of Maria Altmann and her efforts to get back from the Austrian state a Klimt painting that belonged to her family which was confiscated by the Nazis.
Book presentation “La spada non mi ha salvata”

The book tells the story of Helene Mayer, a Jewish fencing champion who moved to the U.S. and was later recalled by the Nazi Reich to participate and win 1936 Berlin Olympic Games . In this story the boundaries between good and evil blur by dealing with the themes of sports, Shoah and the Nazi Reich. The Author and the Deputy Mayor of the City of Venice will participate.

Film Screening "Resistance"

The film follows the story of a Jewish aspiring actor during World War II. Joining the French Resistance, he will use his skills to save the lives of hundreds of Jewish orphans before becoming world famous as Marcel Marceau.
