A high-level delegation of Kazakhstan met with the Secretariat of the Council of Europe International Co-operation Group on Drugs and Addictions (Pompidou Group) in Strasbourg to discuss opportunities for co-operation, focusing on drug policy, law enforcement and cross-border security.

The Kazakhstani delegation, led by Vice-Minister of Interior Aidar SAITBEKOV and Anel BAKYTBEKKYZY, Consul General, accompanied by a Counsellor from the Consulate General of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Strasbourg, a representative from the National Security Committee, and a representative from the Prosecutor General’s Office, expressed their interest in exploring engagement with the Pompidou Group specifically in the sector of law enforcement, capacity-building and human-rights-based approaches to drug policy.

The meeting took place following a Resolution of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (Resolution 2616 (2025)) of 30 September 2025, which welcomes Kazakhstan’s reform efforts and encourages deeper engagement with the European legal space. In particular, the Resolution highlights the importance of considering the country’s accession to the Pompidou Group.

Both sides expressed readiness to strengthen technical dialogue and explore practical steps for cooperation in line with Kazakhstan’s reform priorities and the Council of Europe standards. The Pompidou Group affirmed its openness to continued exchanges to support Kazakhstan in its evolving policy priorities.
