Pompidou Group reviewed progress and priorities on drug policy, human rights and emerging challenges

From drug-related organised crime to the growing risks of online and digital addictions, drug policy continues to face new and evolving challenges. How can international cooperation keep pace? This was one of the key questions addressed at the 99th meeting of the Pompidou Group’s Committee of Permanent Correspondents, held on 5–6 November 2026 in Strasbourg and online.

The meeting provided an opportunity to take stock of progress under the Pompidou Group’s 2026–2029 Work Programme and look ahead to the priorities shaping its implementation.

An exchange of views with Gianluca Esposito, Director General of Human Rights and Rule of Law, covered the Group’s strategic development and highlighted its value as a platform for co-operation on drug-related challenges that focuses on protecting and promoting human rights.

Particular attention was given to emerging challenges at the intersection of drug policy, human rights and security. Members discussed the work of the Drafting Committees on Human Rights and Drug Policies and on Risks and Harms of Online and Digital Addictions.

The discussions also highlighted practical co-operation to counter drug trafficking and related criminal activity. Members received updates on initiatives involving general aviation, drug control services at airports and mail centres and international law enforcement co-operation – areas where sharing expertise and strengthening co-ordinated responses remain essential.

Members were also briefed on the discussions held during the first meeting of the Working Group on Strategic Development and Governance on 4 November, which focused on strengthening the Pompidou Group’s governance and its strategic direction.

As the meeting drew to a close, members took stock of ongoing activities and considered the priorities for the months ahead. They also began preparations for a significant milestone: the Pompidou Group’s 100th meeting of the Committee of Permanent Correspondents, scheduled to take place in Strasbourg in June 2027.
