Building on the Council of Europe’s priorities established at the Reykjavik Summit in May 2023, the 29th edition of the Lisbon Forum on “Human Rights, Environment and Economic Crimes: Youth at the forefront” will explore the intricate connections between economic crimes, corruption, and environmental issues. Taking place on 16 and 17 October at the Ismaili Centre in Lisbon, Portugal, the Lisbon Forum 2023 will furthermore emphasize the pivotal role that young people play in catalyzing change, particularly in the realm of combatting corruption and safeguarding our environment.

The interdependence of human rights and the environment is undeniable. The enjoyment of the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment is fundamental to permit a life of dignity and well-being for present and future generations. The ongoing environmental degradation is a global threat requiring urgent, coordinated action from all stakeholders. Corruption, particularly in economic crimes like illegal logging, further exacerbates these issues.

These challenges extend far beyond Europe's borders, emphasizing the global nature of the issue. To effectively address them, cooperation and solidarity must be fostered across regions worldwide.

Equally significant is the active engagement of young people in addressing these challenges, as they symbolize the future and can serve as catalysts for change, inspiring their peers and advocating for climate justice for generations yet to come. They possess the potential to influence shifts in attitudes and behaviours vital for the well-being of our planet.

In this context, the Lisbon Forum 2023 will provide a platform for dialogue and reflection. It will convene representatives from international organisations, national governments, parliaments, local and regional authorities, civil society, youth organisations, academia, foundations, and media worldwide. Together, they will work collaboratively to make significant progress on addressing these critical issues.
