In the framework of the project “iLEGEND II: Intercultural Learning Exchange through Global Education, Networking and Dialogue (2019-2022)”, Joint programme of the European Union and the Council of Europe for the promotion of Global Education/Global Development Education (GE/GDE), seven Follow-up Youth Initiatives have been supported by the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe. These initiatives were aimed at promoting and raising awareness about Global Education/Global Development Education among young people.

The initiatives, selected among the twenty-seven proposals received, took place in Serbia, Slovenia, Tunisia and United-Kingdom, from the 1st of May to the 31st of August 2022. Many activities, such as training courses, seminars, workshops, awareness-raising actions, and online events, targeted directly young people and educational practitioners. These initiatives tackled relevant issues related to Global Education, such as climate change, SDGs, media literacy, digital citizenship, gender mainstream and sustainability.

The seven organisations supported by the Follow-up Youth Initiatives 2022 successfully achieved their objectives, promoting Global Education among young people, supporting the development of new skills and competences for educational practitioners, and reaching out about 250 direct beneficiaries through their initiatives.

If you want to know more about the beneficiary organisations and their projects, please have a look at the Youth Initiatives 2022 report.

Global education is education that opens people’s eyes and minds to the realities of the globalised world and awakens them to bring about a world of greater justice, equity and Human Rights for all.

The Maastricht Declaration, 2002.

Global education is a pedagogical approach that fosters multiple perspectives and the deconstruction of stereotypes and builds on a learner centred approach to foster critical awareness of global challenges and engagement for sustainable lifestyles.

Global Education competences build on development education, human rights education, education for sustainability, education for peace and conflict prevention and intercultural education, all being the global dimension of education for citizenship.

The North-South Centre’s work for the development of global education started in 1991 with pioneer regional multistakeholder seminars on the issue. They led to the drafting of the Global Education Charter in 1997, which became its reference background document, later consolidated by the recommendations from European global education multistakeholder congresses and regional seminars, as well as a capacity building scheme for formal and non-formal educators.

Ever since, the North-South Centre has been contributing to global education advocacy and pedagogical support through a number of initiatives, at institutional and education levels.
