ICANN Capacity building workshop for African law enforcement

The ICANN Capacity building workshop for African law enforcement agencies (LEAs) was a first attempt to get more African countries involved in the work of the Public Safety Working Group, and it served to share experiences between the different countries and organizations represented, namely: Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Somalia, Canada, USA, AfriNIC, Facebook, FBI, ICANN, Internet Society, Interpol.

GLACY+ supported the participation of representatives from its African priority/hub countries - Ghana, Mauritius, Morocco and Senegal - and new opportunities for capacity building activities in the region were discussed during the meeting.

In addition, a few remarks have been addressed regarding the complementarity of the African Union Convention on cybersecurity and data protection and the Budapest Convention, as per in the related study realized by the Council of Europe.

Furthermore, the representative of Facebook called for an increase in the number of reports from African LEAs, at the moment way less in numbers than the average registered in other areas of the world. This was also the occasion to share a preview of the results obtained by the T-CY Cloud Evidence Group regarding the collaboration with foreign service providers under Article 18 of the Budapest Convention. Additional information can be retrieved in the related report on Criminal Justice Access to data in the cloud.
