GLACY+ & INTERPOL: 5th Digital Security Challenge 2022

The GLACY+ Project supported the organisation of the 5th Digital Security Challenge hosted by INTERPOL (DSC 2022) in partnership with the Cyber Defense Institute. The three-day hybrid event (11-13 October) was hosted at the INTERPOL Global Complex for Innovation Center in Singapore with participants attending online.

The challenge brought together 48 cybercrime investigators and digital forensics experts from 40 countries (including participants from 7 GLACY+ countries: Chile, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ghana, Morocco, Nigeria and Paraguay). Participants were divided in four teams racing against the clock in order to solve a crime, identify the suspect and gather sufficient evidence for a successful prosecution. The aim of the exercise was to provide a realistic simulated environment for specialists to further develop their knowledge and exchange expertise in investigating cybercrimes.

Jacqueline DE LANGE, Assistant Director within the Cybercrime Directorate of INTERPOL mentioned that “This year featured a strong focus on ransomware groups, with lectures and hands-on exercises covering the tools and techniques used for investigating cybercrime organised groups and their infrastructure, the analysis of ransomware, as well as anonymization techniques used in their operation of illegal websites on the dark web. Participants from our member countries learned how to identify Illegal websites on the dark web and how to conduct ransomware investigations.”

This year's DSC focused on illegal sites operated by ransom groups and analysis of various criminal infrastructures on the darknet. As a result of the challenge, participants identified eight new ransom groups and 17 illegal sites on the dark net. INTERPOL will share these findings with its member countries.

INTERPOL aims to reduce the impact of increasingly sophisticated and malicious threats posed by cybercriminals by strengthening its cooperation with its membership and partners worldwide to improve security in cyberspace.
