The GLACY-e project, in cooperation with EU CyberNet supported the Ministry of Policing and Communications of Fiji in the organisation of a series of awareness sessions on the importance of a data protection framework in advancement of Fiji's progress towards its first data protection legislation.
The meetings gathered a wide range of stakeholders from different sectors such as telecommunications, tourism, financial services, business processes outsourcing sector, accounting, transport and utilities public sector officials, policymakers and cybersecurity professionals, civil society, and academia.
The discussions covered key aspects of data protection, including the scope of responsibility across organisations, core principles of lawful processing, and the roles of data controllers and processors. Participants were introduced to data subject rights, accountability requirements, and practical measures such as data mapping, retention policies, transparency, and privacy by design.
A strong data protection framework signals readiness of the country to align to international standards such as the Convention 108+ and GDPR. This also paves the way to a potential future ratification of the Second Additional Protocol to the Convention on Cybercrime (Budapest Convention). The GLACY-e project will continue to support Fiji’s authorities in the development of its future Data Protection framework.
