On 4-5 September, GLACY-e project, a joint initiative of the European Union and Council of Europe partnered with ID4D project in facilitating the organisation of a legislative drafting workshop in Lagos, Nigeria, for 30 representatives of the national task force in charge of drafting the Cybercrime Bill, and an awareness session for some 20 members of the National Assembly.
The workshops are a follow up to the first legislative retreat organised in November 2023 and aimed at discussing the provisions of the draft Cybercrime Bill and areas for improvement.
In addition to the recommendations provided to the specific provisions, the meetings concluded by underscoring the relevance to tackle cybercrime and having a strong legal framework. Moreover, there was a notable recognition of the differentiation between cybersecurity and cybercrime, and acknowledgement of the importance to develop two separate Bills to comprehensively address these two interconnected areas.
In the context of the long-standing engagement to support Nigeria's domestic legislative reform efforts in the field of cybercrime and electronic evidence, the GLACY-e project will continue to provide assistance in view of completing the domestic process.
