Ecuador was invited on 30 March 2022 to accede to the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime. Thus, 81 States are now either Parties (66), or have signed it or been invited to accede (15).
The authorities of Ecuador have been cooperating with the Council of Europe in cybercrime matters on multiple occasions, starting in 2008, when the Organisation of American States and the Council of Europe co-organised a regional workshop on cybercrime for countries of Latin America held in Colombia. In 2020/2021, this led to reforms of criminal law that brought domestic legislation broadly in line with the substantive criminal law articles of the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime.
