CyberSouth: National workshop on data protection for multiple Lebanese stakeholders

On 17 February 2023, the CyberSouth joint project of the Council of Europe and the European Union  organised the national workshop “The links between cybercrime investigations and data protection regulation  “ in Beirut, Lebanon.

The event gathered actors from the judicial sector, police, academia and representatives of other EU-funded projects active in the region.

The participants discussed the need to amend the current national legislation on data protection and reviewed the proposed amendments, reflected in a draft law pending parliamentary approval. Throughout this national workshop, they improved the understanding of the links between cybercrime and personal data protection in the framework of the national legislation, the international standards set by the Convention 108+ and the new Second Additional Protocol to the Budapest Convention.

The CyberSouth project will continue to support Lebanon in the legislative reform processes aimed at bringing the cybercrime and the data protection laws in line with international standards.
