Brighton Conference on the Reform of the European Court of Human Rights, 19 and 20 April

Strasbourg, 16 April The President of the Conference of INGOs, Jean-Marie Heydt, participated in the Conference organised by the UK Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers and presented the international NGOs position with regard to the proposals being put forward in the Brighton Declaration for the reform of the European Court of Human Rights.

The Council of Europe North-South Prize 2011 awarded to an INGO, member of the Conference

Strasbourg, 28 March The President of the FIDH (International Federation for Human Rights), Ms Souhayr Belhassen, international NGO member of the Conference of INGOs of the Council of Europe, has been awarded the North-South Prize along with Mr Boris Tadic, President of the Republic of Serbia. The award ceremony took place in Lisbon on 27 March 2012 in the presence of several Portuguese and European personalities.

Session of the Congress: Presentation of the Code of Good Practice for Civil Participation in the decision-making process and exchange of good practice

Strasbourg, 16 March The Code of Good Practice was presented on 22 March on the occasion of the Session of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities. The meeting was aimed at introducing the Code to the members of the Congress and to identify possible further dissemination and use of the Code at the local level.

Meeting between the President of the EESC and the President of the Conference of INGOs

Strasbourg, 28 February The President of the European Economic and Social Committee, Mr Staffan Nilsson, and the President of the Conference of INGOs, Jean-Marie Heydt, met in Strasbourg on 27 February. They discussed together areas for possible future co-operation with regard to certain countries and on specific topics such as civil participation and the fight against poverty.

The EESC is a consultative body of the EU which enables civil society organisations from the member states to express their views at European level.

Civil society says no to dumbing down human rights protection in Europe

Strasbourg, 2 February The Conference of INGOs voices strong opposition to a series of proposals to reform the workings of the European Court of Human Rights currently under discussion at the Council of Europe. The views of the INGO Conference will be brought to the attention of relevant bodies and in particular the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe currently chaired by the United Kingdom.
