“Political status and participation : Women actors of change in the Euro Mediterranean region”

The North-South Centre of the Council of Europe held, in partnership with the sub-Committee on Equal Opportunities for Women and Men of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, a conference entitled “ Political status and participation : Women actors of change in the Euro Mediterranean region”.

The conference, which was supported by the Spanish chairmenship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, took place on the 2nd and 3rd of April in Lisbon, at the Luso-American Foundation.

The aim of the conference was to map the situation of women’s rights in some of the Mediterranean countries through the evolution of family codes and personal status. These evolutions and their obstacles were tackled and approaches and tools to fight them have been discussed.

The conference allowed to emphasise the real evolution of the status of women in the region and their role as fully-fledged citizens, capable of making the mentalities, rules and behaviours evolve.

The conference gathered about fifty participants of both shores of the Mediterranean Sea: Members of Parliament, representatives of governments, NGOs, local and regional authorities, academics.

The North-South Centre offers a privileged setting for debates, exchanges, dialogue consolidation between the stakeholders of the two shores of the Mediterranean Sea on the role of women as actors of the democratic reinforcement, through their political, economical, cultural and social participation.
