Turkey is giving positive consideration to becoming part of the North-South Centre
Addressing the Parliamentary Assembly, on 12 April, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, Ahmet Davutoğlu, responded to a question by Mr Vera Jardim about the North-South Centre and on this occasion stressed that Turkey is giving positive consideration to becoming part of the North-South Centre.

Malta returns to the North-South Centre
In a letter dated 16 September 2010, the Permanent Representation of Malta to the Council of Europe, announced that his country had decided to join the North-South Centre with effect on 1 January 2011.

Azerbaijan joined the North-South Centre
In a letter to the Secretary General dated 7 July 2010, the Minister of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan, Dr. Abulfas Garayev, announced that Azerbaijan would join the Centre on 1 August 2010, making it the 23rd member State of the NSC.

Green-light for the accession of Cape Verde to the North-South Centre
On 9 December 2009, the Committee of Ministers, on the basis of the request addressed on 11 November by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Cape Verde to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, adopted a positive decision in principle regarding the accession of Cape Verde to the North-South Centre. Since then, the statutory consultation of the North-South Centre member States which are not members of the Council of Europe has taken place, and the Holy See and Morocco have both supported this request.

Declaration of the Chair of the North-South Centre regarding the request of Cape Verde to join the North-South Centre
With the accession request of Cape Verde, the North-South Centre takes another very important political step as this request opens the perspective of welcoming – after Morocco – a second African country, and also and above all, our first member State from the Sub-Saharan Africa.

Italy returns to the North-South Centre
Through a letter dated 13 March 2009, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Italy, Mr Frattini, informed the Secretary General of the Council of Europe of the decision taken by the Italian government to re-establish its membership of the North-South Centre, "appreciating its current work and its programmes for the coming years". This decision took effect on 15 March 2009.

Serbia joins the North-South Centre
In a letter dated 6 February 2009, Ambassador Sladjana Prica, Permanent Representative of Serbia to the Council of Europe, has notified to the Secretary General the decision taken in January by the Serbian government to become a member of the North-South Centre. This decision follows an initiative of the Minister for Youth and Sport, Snezana Samardzic-Markovic and took effect on 1 March 2009.
