In September 2016, the Special Representative attended the UN High-Level Summit to address large movements of refugees and migrants in New York. At that Summit, UN member states decided to conclude a Global Compact on Refugees and a Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. The Special Representative followed developments closely and participated in the 2017 consultation phase orally and in writing. Negotiations on the texts began in 2018 with the publication of drafts of both Compacts. The Special Representative has submitted written comments on both the Global Compact for Migration and the Global Compact on Refugees.
