MEDIA ADVISORY: Anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing system in Montenegro: obstacles to the effective system and the way forward

The closing conference “Anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing system in Montenegro: obstacles to the effective system and the way forward” will be organised under the joint European Union/Council of Europe Action against economic crime in Montenegro on Tuesday, 23 November 2021, in Podgorica.

Introductory remarks will be given by:

  • Sergej Sekulovic, Minister of Interior Affairs of Montenegro
  • Janko Odovic, State Secretary, Ministry of Finance and Social Welfare of Montenegro
  • Yngve Engstroem, Head of Co-operation Section, Delegation of the European Union to Montenegro
  • Mustafa Ferati, Head of Economic Crime and Co-operation Division of the Council of Europe
  • Evgenia Giakoumopoulou, Head of Operations, Council of Europe Programme Office in Podgorica

Key issues related to investigation and prosecution of money laundering cases, confiscation, prevention of terrorist financing and targeted financial sanctions will be presented in the conference. Furthermore, key challenges in these areas will be identified and the priority actions aimed at overcoming the challenges will be mapped.

The report that will be presented will also indicate to which extent the Montenegrin anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing legal framework is aligned with standards in the areas of national co-ordination, money and value transfer services, regulation and supervision of financial and non-financial institutions and competences of law enforcement agencies.

The conference will begin on 23 November 2021 at 09:00 at the Hotel CUE, Cetinjska 7, the Capital Plaza. The opening presentations of the event are open to media. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided.

All precautionary measures related to COVID-19 will be respected.

The conference will be organised within the “Action against economic crime in Montenegro”, a part of the joint European Union and Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022”, implemented by Economic Crime and Co-operation Division of Council of Europe.
