On 22 June 2021, the Chairperson of Charter’s Committee of Experts, Ms Vesna Crnic-Grotic, met parliamentarians from the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly on the occasion of a hearing on the application of the Charter. The Sub-Committee on the Rights of Minorities of the Assembly Committee on Equality and Non-Discrimination was introduced to the novelties of the Charter’s monitoring mechanism following its reform such as mid-term reports by states parties and publishing evaluation reports shortly after their adoption by the Committee of Experts. Participants discussed how the Committee of Experts and the states parties to the Charter have adapted to the pandemic context in terms of protection of regional or minority languages. The role of parliamentarians in supporting new ratifications of the Charter as well as the implementation of the Committee’s recommendations was highlighted.
